Etihad launches summer flights to Salalah

Creepers on the tree stems

Someone in network planning at Etihad must have been reading my mind. Etihad has launched a new seasonal flight to Salalah in Oman. The route will operate four times a week over July and August to meet the extra holiday demand.

A direct flight from Abu Dhabi has been top of my travel wish list for some time. Salalah is a wonderful year-round destination. However, it is particularly appealing during the Khareef season which runs from the end of June till early September.

The monsoon transforms the region around Salalah into a lush green landscape. The light rain keeps temperatures comfortably in the mid-20 Celsius. That can make for a quick and comfortable escape when Dubai and Abu Dhabi are baking in the middle of the summer heat.

Etihad starts flying to Salalah (SLL) on Tuesday 2 July. Flights will operate on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. The schedule is not ideal for maximising time away over a long weekend.

Redeeming Etihad Guest miles to Salalah

There seems to be pretty good availability in both Business and Economy throughout July and August.

A one-way redemption in Business Class between Abu Dhabi and Salalah costs 17,852 Guest Miles and AED 490 in taxes and fees. A standard economy redemption is 8,775 Guests Miles and AED 310 for taxes and fees. There also appear to be Saver and Deal redemptions available from 7,564 Guest Miles and AED 309 in taxes and fees.

In the meantime, return cash tickets start from AED 1,173 in Economy and AED 4,419 in Business.

Getting to Salalah from Dubai

There are several direct flights between Dubai and Salalah. flydubai operates two flights each day while Oman Air has a once-daily flight.

The flydubai flight to Salalah operates out of Terminal 3 at Dubai International. Skywards elites have access to the Emirates premium lounges in Terminal 3. And of course, all Skywards members also earn miles and tier miles with flydubai.
